Corduroy the bear lives in a department store. All Corduroy wants is a loving home. One day a little girl comes to the store and wants to buy him but her mother says no because he is missing a button. This makes the little girl and Corduroy very sad. That night, Corduroy goes around the department store to find his botton but when he knocks a lamp down, the security guard finds him and takes him back to the toy shelf. The next morning, that same little girl comes back to the store and buys Corduroy with the money she had in her piggy bank. She takes him home and sews a new button on Corduroy right away. They are both very happy that they have found a friend.
I chose to use Corduroy because it teaches very important lessons. It teaches the importance of acceptance and friendship which are two very important lessons that all children need. I also like how the author uses African American characters. This is a good way to show diversity through literature.
As a response for this story, students will create their own Corduroy bear. On the back of their bear, they will write a summary of the story and identify the main characters. We will also have a class teddy bear picnic after reading this story where all students will bring in their favorite teddy bear and we will have snacks with teddy bears and talk about the story. Each student will also have to make up their own story about their teddy bear during the teddy bear picnic. These activities would be done in a kindergarden classroom and cover the standard: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding under the strand Reading: Literature.
