Pierre the penguin
This is the true story of Pierre the Penguin, who lives at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Pierre is stressed out, and begins losing his feathers. He can’t swim, can’t keep his weight up, and is being teased by the other penguins. So he gets more stressed and loses more feathers. Pam, the aquatic biologist who takes care of the penguins, must find a way to help Pierre get better. She decides to make Pierre a mini wetsuit so he is able to swim. After much planning, the wet suit is made for Pierre and it is a success.
I chose this book because it is a nonfiction book. I think that it is important to expose young children to non fiction books because as they get older, they see non fiction as boring. Pierre the Penguin is a true story that young children find interesting. It is also written as a poem which is fun for children to read.
After reading Pierre the Penguin to a third grade class, the students would be asked to create an interactive trifold board that explains the story and has activities to go along with the story. This activity covers the third grade english language arts standard: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea which is under the Reading:informational texts strand.
